Step by step

  1. 1

    Choose the agent carefully

Check its internal name, public brand and embed ID so you do not interrupt another website.

  2. 2

    Change the active state

Use the agent’s activation control and save. Consider telling your team before deactivating an agent in use.

  3. 3

    Verify from the public page

Reload the website in a separate browser context. An inactive agent should not accept normal public AI chat.

  4. 4

    Check connected entry points

Test the installed widget and any developer/channel integration that uses this agent. Re-enable and retest when maintenance is complete.

Good to know

Deactivation is not the same as taking over one conversation. Use Inbox Takeover or Pause for a conversation-level intervention.

Check the result

Save, start a fresh test conversation and compare the answer with your approved business facts. Settings do not rewrite messages already sent.

Questions & troubleshooting

Only one chat needs a person

Keep the agent active and use the conversation’s staff controls instead of disabling the entire agent.
